Note Formerly, Japanese authors often identified lowland or mountane type plants (Japanese common name: dai-monji-sou) as Saxifraga mutabilis (Koidzumi) Nakai & Ohashi (syn. Saxifraga fortunei Hooker f. var. incisolobata (Engler & Irmscher) Nakai), and subalpine type plants (Japanese common name: miyama dai-monji-sou) as Saxifraga cortusifolia Siebold & Zuccarini var. alpina Matsumura & Nakai.
Flower of lowland ans mountane type plant looks like '大' letter, but flower of subalpine type plant doesn't.
Today, these different latin names are consolidated into single latin name:
Saxifraga fortunei Hooker f. var. alpina (Matsumura & Nakai) Nakai.
Shape and colors of this species are very variable. Therefore, selected many kinds of beautifl varieties have been cultivated in many places.
